“Do you know where you are?”

The voice reached Gregor, deep and commanding, sending a thunderous shock into his heart. It was a voice he had not heard for some time, not since the day of his resurrection.

With a jolt, Gregor forced his eyes open to find himself suspended in nothing, a void whiter than the snowy plains of northern Levanthria, and beyond that, a darkness shrouded by shadows.

“Where am I? Am I dreaming?” Gregor’s cracked, dry voice spoke. It was as though he had sand in his throat. He was not bound by rope, and his body seemed as though it did not weigh a thing. He was simply suspended in the air. Although for that to be true, there would need to be some form of terrain underfoot, and in this situation, there was nothing at all.

“You are not dreaming,” the voice boomed. There was not a direction to it, as if the noise of the voice surrounded him from all sides. “You are in a void that is between that of the living and the dead.”

“Why have you brought me here?”

“My powers are great, but not unlimited. You know from our last conversation why I have brought you back from death. What it is you need to do. Should you bring about the end of your life prematurely, however, I will not be able to resurrect you again.”

“Why shroud my past in forgotten memories? I remember that I have two daughters. Why would you stop me from remembering them?”

“What once was only serves as a distraction from what is.” The voice was elevated and irate. Whoever this deity was that Gregor was speaking with, it was not pleased with him. “I shrouded your memories to help you focus on –”

“Vanquishing the darkness and slaying the demons that plague these lands, I know,” Gregor cut the voice off, his own frustrations rising. “Is this not what I have done for the last two years, since you raised me from the death, since you brought me back from my icy grave?”

“Your death was brought about prematurely by the interference of another who should not be walking amongst humankind. I still do not fully understand her motives or what she hopes to achieve, but we must be resolute. You cannot be distracted.”

“Distracted!” Gregor replied, his gravelly voice echoing as if in a chamber.

“It is true that you have destroyed the demons you have come across, but do not think me a fool to not see your intentions. The path you walk is to find your daughters. These children of the past. Why is it you find yourself in this town of all others?”

“What do you mean?” Gregor asked, perplexed at the voice’s words.

“This town, this town means more to you than you realise. Why else do you think your path has led you here? It is almost as if it is fated. For the last two years, you have travelled town to town, searching for your past, only to find nothing but darkness.
